I think it’s time that we discuss the, uh, elephant in the room, the all seeing eye, or the eye of provenance. The all seeing eye is an important symbol of the supreme being, borrowed by the Freemasons from the nations of antiquity. Both the Hebrews and Egyptians appear to have derived its uses. from that natural inclination of figurative minds to select an organ as the symbol of a function which it is intended purely to discharge.
The foot was often depicted as a symbol of swiftness, the arm was a symbol of strength, and the hand a symbol of On that same principle, the eye is a symbol of watchfulness. In ancient times, the eyes expressed the innermost feelings and true desires of one’s heart. Therefore, a good eye revealed generous and moral intentions, but an evil eye exposed an evil heart with wicked intentions.
Envy, greed, even jealousy. When encased in a triangle and surrounded by rays, the three points represent divinity. I wonder if we know any religion that has three points or… What is that? A trinity? A trinity? And the rays represent watchfulness. So when everything’s put together, it means that God is watching you.
The all seeing eye is the symbol of God’s divine care and watchfulness over the universe. The use of the symbol in this sense is repeatedly used in Hebrew text. Example, the psalmist says in Psalms 34 15, The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous. And his ears are attentive to their cry. In the apocryphal book, Conversations with Moses and God on Mount Sinai, the concept of the watchful eye, a divine watchful eye, is beautifully allegorized.
It says, Then Moses said to the Lord, O Lord, dost thou not sleep? And the Lord said unto Moses, I never sleep. But take a cup and fill it with water. Then Moses took a cup and filled it with water as the Lord commanded him. Then the Lord cast into the heart of Moses the breath of slumber. So he slept and thus the cup fell from his hand and the water was spilled.
Then Moses awoke from his sleep and God said to Moses, I declare by my power and by my glory. That if I were to ever withdraw my providence from the universe, and heavens, and the earth, for no longer a space of time than thou hast slept, they would at once fall to ruin and confusion like the cup fell from thy hand.
And yes, the Egyptians used the same symbol, with the same meaning, for their god, Osiris. The all seeing eye may then be considered a symbol of God manifested in his omnipresence? His guardian and preserving character to which Solomon alludes to, in the book of Proverbs 15, three, when he says, the eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding or as in revised versions, keeping watch upon the evil and the good, it is a symbol of the omnipresent deity.
So do I know what this symbol represents? Yes. I wouldn’t put it on my wall if I didn’t. Somo d.
